Service Service is recruiting for an experienced Principal RF Hardware Engineer to join an established engineering business developing highly precise RF and electrical calibration instruments used by customers worldwide.
This is a senior technical role with responsibility for the design, simulation, validation and lifecycle of precision RF and mixed-signal hardware, working across the full product lifecycle from concept and prototyping through to production and ongoing development.
You will act as the technical authority for RF hardware within the engineering team, helping shape the future direction of the product range while also providing technical leadership and mentoring to other engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the architecture and design of precision RF and mixed-signal hardware and PCAs.
- Develop high-performance designs focused on low phase noise, spectral purity, signal integrity and metrology-grade stability.
- Take designs from concept, simulation and prototyping through verification, release and production.
- Carry out RF simulation, modelling and analysis including S-parameters, harmonic balance, EM and transmission-line analysis.
- Correlate simulation models with measured results using VNAs, spectrum and phase-noise analysers, TDRs and oscilloscopes.
- Lead design reviews, risk mitigation and component obsolescence activities.
- Work closely with manufacturing and test engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable, testable and achieve strong first-pass yields.
- Provide technical leadership across systems, firmware and metrology teams.
- Mentor engineers and develop the wider team’s RF capability.
- Contribute to the long-term RF technology roadmap and investigate new measurement technologies.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Degree qualified in Electrical, Electronic, RF/Microwave Engineering or a related discipline.
- Extensive hands-on experience in precision RF and mixed-signal hardware design.
- Proven experience taking RF products through to production.
- Strong RF/microwave design experience across DC to 27 GHz, with experience extending to 50 GHz+ highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of areas such as low phase-noise synthesis, signal generation and levelling, frequency conversion and high-frequency signal integrity.
- Proficient with RF simulation and modelling tools such as ADS, AWR/Microwave Office, HFSS, CST or equivalent.
- Extensive hands-on experience with VNAs, spectrum/phase-noise analysers, signal generators, power meters, TDRs and oscilloscopes.
- Good understanding of metrology and measurement traceability.
- Experience working with manufacturing teams on design-for-manufacture, test development, yield and component obsolescence.
- Strong communication, leadership and mentoring skills.
- Able to work on-site at the Norwich design centre when required.
This is an excellent opportunity for an established RF engineer looking to take technical ownership of complex, precision RF hardware and play a key role in shaping the future development of a specialist engineering product range.
